Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to questions you may have about the health or ingredients of our sunless spray tanning solutions.

Yes, it is. The FDA approved Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a sugar cane derivative that results in the tan, for safety in 1973. When applied to the skin, DHA penetrates only the top layer of skin — it does not absorb into the body or bloodstream. DHA and sunless tanning has been recommended by the Skin Cancer Organization, American Academy of Dermatology, Canadian Dermatology Association, The American Cancer Society and the American Medical Association as a safe alternative to traditional sun tanning. DHA is the only ingredient that has been approved safe for use, which is why Aviva Labs does not use other ingredients such as Erythrulose, which may be unsafe.

No. Aviva Labs uses the only FDA-approved ingredient for sunless tanning - DHA (dihydroxyacetone.) No other skin colorants, including erythrulose, have been approved by the FDA for sunless tanning; therefore we do not and will not use erythrulose in our products.

No. In competitive products, Alcohol used as a drying agent to accelerate drying time in their oil-based solution. Alcohol can be very drying to the skin and can cause irritation. Furthermore, alcohol intensifies degradation of DHA and thus shortens the shelf life of the product. Aviva Inspires solution is water-based and thus does not require Alcohol to speed up drying.

No. In competitive products Aloe Vera is used as an oil-based moisturizer. Though beneficial in other cosmetics and skincare products, Aloe Vera has many negative side effects when used in sunless solutions. Since Aloe Vera is a viscous, oily secretion from the Aloe plant, it can dramatically slow drying times, clog pores and HVLP spray guns, plus stain clothes and bed sheets. Aloe-based or oil-based products also require more air compressor pressure to spray, are more difficult to clean up, and often require the addition of alcohol (which introduces a whole new set of problems) to speed up the drying time. Aviva Labs does NOT use Aloe Vera or alcohol in our Aviva Inspires solutions. Instead, we developed a unique, new product that is water-based (oil-free) rather than Aloe Vera-based (oil-based.) Aviva Inspires' solution is highly moisturizing, yet it dries in seconds, rather than 10 to 15 minutes like Aloe Vera-based solutions. You can truly feel the difference.

No. First, our sunless tanning solution is designed specifically for people with hypersensitive skin. Second, no one wants sunless tanning solution that smells too flowery, fruity or sweet. Not only can these fragrances be very unpleasant, but also, many salons that have male clients appreciate our fragrance-free solutions. Lastly, formulators are are not experienced in the formulation of crafting a sunless tanning solution often times have uncalibrated DHA, leading to an extremely unpleasant chemical odor during the service and that the client smells after their first shower post-service. Since we are a true manufacturer and do it all ourselves, our experience allows us to craft a solution that has no scent without having to use chemical maskers.

Aviva Labs sunless solutions are truly hypoallergenic — oil-free, alcohol-free, and fragrance-free, designed specifically for hypersensitive skin. Though some competitors may claim to have hypoallergenic solutions, they can have over 33 ingredients or do not disclose their ingredients to the public. As part of our philosophy Beauty Today. Health for Life.™, we use only the purest, essential ingredients necessary for optimal results. Dermatologists agree that the greater the number of ingredients, the greater the chances for allergic reactions. Our sunless tanning solution contains only 13 ingredients (including the 3 colors that make up the bronzer.) We have counted up to 33 ingredients in some well-known competitors' solutions.

Aviva Inspires' solutions, as well as other sunless tanning solutions and even the active ingredient DHA, have not been tested on pregnant women and are not approved safe by the FDA on pregnant women. As such, we as a company do not recommend it for pregnant clients.

Generally, salons will recommend their clients wear garments that are loose and dark in color after an application. However, Aviva Inspires' solutions dry quickly and are water-based so they rarely transfer to clothing or bed sheets. If any color does get transferred to clothing, it can be easily washed in a normal cycle and will not stain. However, do avoid wearing light colored leather, acrylic or other sensitive fabrics that cannot be easily washed just to be safe.

An Aviva Inspires sunless tan will usually last 5-7 days provided you have properly prepared prior to the service. To maximize the life of the tan, thoroughly exfoliate thoroughly using Aviva Inspires Deep Clean Exfoliant prior to application and moisturize generously with the Aviva Inspires Velvet Soft Moisturizing Crème each day after the application. Additionally extending products such as Aviva Inspires Skin Glow and Aviva Inspires Tan Restore Sunless Tanning Gel can prolong the life of the tan up to 3 day longer and beyond. Additionally our Aviva Labs' Aviva Organics line of natural sunless tanning care products achieves the same result.

Absolutely. If your client has very fair skin (Fitzpatrick Skin type 1), and always burns in the sun and therefore has never been able to tan, they can achieve a sunless tan. With Aviva Inspires 8% DHA solution or Aviva Inspires Winter Glow, they will look terrific.

No. Remember that this isn't like paint, where if the look gets dull, you can just retouch and add more color...it’s a chemical reaction with the amino acids in the keratin layer of your skin. Your tan should be completely faded before you come back for another application, otherwise you will be applying more DHA on top of skin that still has DHA in it and can result in a cracked, patchy looking tan.
